Deer on the wall!

The design was originally for cardboard... but thin MDF works great too!

  • Use the template deer template  (http://teendiy.blogspot.co.nz)  and cut from MDF... a scroll saw saves time!
  • Pieces can be painted or covered in patterned paper. Scrapbooking background papers work well.
  • Add a couple of coats of matt vanish to protect the paper.

Tie Dyed Totes

Tie dyed totes are made from dyed calico, drill and cotton fabrics. I added a variety of embellishments: felt die cuts, machine embroidery, gathered circle fabric, buttons, velvet ribbon, beads and shrink plastic. I used zips for closures and lined the bags for extra strength. I  stitched the bag on the left in a mitre corner at the bottom to add depth, so thicker items can be carried.

Shrink plastic buttons

Shrink plastic is available in sheets from most craft stores. I used white. It shrinks down about 40% of its original size.  It needs to be sanded with a fine sandpaper first in both directions - I used about a 320 grit. I cut a circle using a die cut and punched to holes with a paper punch. Coloured pencils were used to colour in the design - colours will intensify when they are heated! For a special project it is a good idea to test on scrap material. Projects look more defined if edges are coloured. I used black to outline the ladybird button.

The large circle shows the original size.

When colouring and cutting is completed the shrink plastic can be heated with a heat gun or in a oven (small toastie ovens are perfect for small projects) on

Photo transfer onto fabric

Original photo
I thought it would be fun to manipulate photos and transfer them onto fabric. I made a simple drawstring bag, but the ideas are endless: pencil cases, T shirts, patches for: hats, caps, bags. You could draw your own design and scan the image and print onto the transfer paper. Great for personalised gifts!

The website that I used to create the 'pop art' effect for my photo: http://bighugelabs.com/
There are many different applications you can use - choose a simple photo to create your design and test on paper first. If you are using any writing -
the writing will need to be in reverse print!

Test print on paper
Once you have your design print onto the transfer sheet (I purchased mine from a stationery store) and trim away excess paper.  Wait for ink to dry - about 20 minutes or follow instructions given. Cotton fabric gives the best results.  Use a hot iron that is empty of water and fix with the printed side to the fabric. Wait for it to cool a minute or so and carefully remove paper sheet and there is your printed design!
